Business Studies

Intent

We aim to deliver all students the opportunity to develop student’s appreciation and interest in the field of Business. We want to give the students the confidence, independence and resilience to be able to progress to further education, training or employment. We want to make them the entrepreneurs of the future and throughout our lessons develop their skills to be a successful employee. This is embedded in our curriculum through the discussion of employment legislation as well as understanding the drawbacks and benefits to sources of finance such as mortgages for their future. We also develop written and verbal analysis and evaluation skills, which are transferable across a variety of different environments.

Implementation

The scheme of work is designed with progression in mind. Foundation knowledge and skills are studied in KS4, which allows students to build, specialise and improve outcomes at the end of Y11, Y12 and throughout Y13. The course allows for outcomes for all levels. Each lesson should follow a basic structure: consolidation, building of knowledge, application, reflection. The department will follow Rosenshine’s ‘Principles of Instruction’ when planning lessons In each lesson there should be sufficient support and challenge to ensure all students make good and outstanding progress. In student’s books there should be clear evidence of progress over time demonstrated through student work, marking and feedback. Books will be marked every three weeks, with summative feedback provided and an opportunity for students to respond to the marking in the form of follow up questions to support the commitment of knowledge to their LTM. Vocabulary will be taught explicitly. Words should be relevant to the learning and the teaching of vocabulary should be embedded in the LTPS/STPS. Vocabulary will be delivered to students through ‘Talk Like a Businessperson’ With new vocabulary introduced prior to engaging with the unit. Writing skills will be developed using the ‘Writing Revolution’ theory, also known as the Hochman Method to underpin practice. Reading skills will be developed using strategies from: Kylene Beers ‘When Kids Can’t Read: What Teachers Can Do’ (2003).

Impact

The impact of the intent and implementation can be judged in numerous ways. One being the number of students who continue to study from KS4 to KS5 and KS5 to further business opportunities.During exam units, students will be given mini topic tests twice every half term and a formal mock exam. Students completing both coursework and exam units will be given extended writing tasks that will be marked, and they will be given formative feedback.

Business Enterprise and Marketing

The Harris Academy Orpington (HAO) Business department aims to deliver opportunities to develop student's appreciation and interest in the field of Business, Marketing and Enterprise. We want to give students the confidence, independence and resilience to be able to progress to further education, training or employment. We also want to develop written and verbal analysis and evaluation skills, which are transferrable across a variety of different environments.

Useful Resources and Revision Support

Here at HAO Key Stage 4, students are able to undertake the OCR National Level 1/2 Certificate in Enterprise and Marketing (J819).

Through the study of three mandatory units, this course helps students to develop applied knowledge and practical skills in Enterprise and Marketing. AT HAO one of our main focus areas is to ensure that students achieve their career aspiration, and this qualification provides students with a great chance to be able to do that.

Support and Enrichment

At HAO in order to support individual students throughout their course, with a view to consolidating prior learning and ensuring maximum progress, the department offers extra curricula exam revision and coursework sessions, as required. There will also be an opportunity for students to participate in enrichment activities such as being part of Young Enterprise. There will also be a number of guest speakers scheduled to deliver talks / workshops with industry experience, which will help to highlight potential career pathways to our students.

Business Level 3 CTech

Exam Board: OCR

Here at HAO Key Stage 5, students can undertake the OCR Cambridge Technical Level 3 in Business (extended Certificate).

This course is a natural progression to understanding key concepts that are covered in the course studied at KS4. It carries equivalent UCAS points to A levels but is a different sort of qualification, assessed through a combination of exams and coursework and focused on real businesses rather than a theoretical approach. You will study areas such as marketing, accounting, people management, business operations, ethical issues and consumer law. You will develop your skills in report writing, presentations and research. Above all, this is a practical subject rooted in business case studies and occasional visits.

Entry requirements

This qualification is designed for pupils who have passed five or more GCSEs including English and Maths. If you need to re-take English or Maths but are accepted into the Sixth Form at Harris Orpington, you are still eligible to take this course. There is no need to have a background of studying Business or Economics - but you do need to have an interest in Business!

Course Aims

The aim of the course is designed to encourage investigation and to support a highly active, student centred approach.  Students will be encouraged to consider management decisions and their impact on a business.  Students’ organisational and higher order skills, such as analysis and evaluation, will be enhanced through this course.  Students will be expected to take responsibility for their own work and time management.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed through a combination of exams and portfolios of work - mostly written work but slide presentations and video presentations can also be included.

Students study twelve units over the two years and the resulting qualification is broadly the equivalent of two A level courses with respect to University entrance points.  It will take up two option choices.
